Carol Lipton’s
An American in Paris
What makes you a real Paryorker? Although I now live in Paris, a part of me will always be a New Yorker. I belong to both cities which are part of me and will always be in my soul.
How did you become one? At first, I came to Paris to move my life on. And for nine years, my life, myself and my cat moved a lot, alternating between three months in New York and two months in Paris… and vice versa!
Do you know any other paryorkers? Jasmine Vegas, a New York singer who lives in Paris, Sophie Bramel, a Franco-American journalist.
How do these two cities contribute to balancing your personal and/or your professional life? My daughter, my professional life and my friends are in Paris. I love being both Parisian and an “American in Paris”. I like the dynamism and reactivity in New York, and I feel at home there… even though I don’t live there anymore.
What’s the difference between the New-Yorker you and the Parisian you? The Parisian in me takes longer to do things, admiring the city’s lights and developing a hedonistic side. The New Yorker is always busy doing something.
What images do these two cities bring to mind? A friend once told me that Paris is the only big city with an enormous toy for a symbol – the Eiffel Tower. It is the city of appearance where everything seems beautiful. In New York, the symbol is the Empire State Building – a tower full of offices for working. It is a city for doing things.

What’s the first thing you do when you set foot in Paris? I look at my mail and unpack my bags.
And the last one, when you leave? I water my plants.
What’s the best time of day for you in Paris? Early in the morning.
Do you have a ritual that’s intimately related to the city? I love walking for hours or riding my bike; I love to take shortcuts to discover streets or alleys I haven’t seen before.
What excites you about Paris? Places you can discover and which make you feel they belong to you personally – such a magical experience. The Palais Royal bridge at any time of the day, discovering an unknown alleyway or courtyard.
What annoys you? The slowness, the lack of efficiency. It’s really a Catch-22 – I love Paris for the things which annoy me about it!
