Orianne Garcia’s
Relaxing New York

For you, New York City, means… Politeness, melting pot, pretzels – because I’m from Alsace, I like places that have pretzels (smiles), happiness to be alive, playfulness, possibilities, etc. Excitement and calmness at the same time. And that’s what is surprising. New York also means freedom. Freedom meaning that you are rarely judged there. You can go into the most elegant boutiques looking like hell without anyone even batting an eye. It’s terrific!

What is your best recollection of New York City? An evening at a restaurant in Harlem called Miss Maude’s. We left the Pierre – a hotel that is the height of chic – and when we gave the address to Miss Maude’s to the driver, he was very taken aback – we were completely leaving the “proper-in-all respects” – atmosphere of the Pierre. When we got there, we found an extremely pleasant place where nice people waited on us as if they were family. When we left, they ordered a taxi for us and told us to wait inside the restaurant. The contrast between this family restaurant and the potential jungle that you imagined outside was rather exciting. Since then, I go back regularly to that restaurant. What excites you about New York City? It’s a city that makes you rediscover your sense of amazement. When you go there, you always ask yourself, “What good surprise am I going to have when I get there?” You have the impression that someone took the nicest people from the four corners of the world and put them there! People are so creative. There is even a superstore for dogs! I also love the fact that the customer comes first. It’s a little like on the Web, but not virtual. What annoys you about New York City? Nothing. Even the cabbies are great. What is the difference between the Parisian and the New Yorker in you? New York City wakes up my rock-n-roll side. In New York City, I go out a lot and more readily allow strangers to talk to me. I’m more open to unlikely encounters. But on the other hand, in Paris I go to the movies, which is something I wouldn’t do in New York City. What is the best time of day for you in New York City and why? Mornings, because when I get to New York City, I become a morning person. Immediately, I enjoy that time of day. Do you have a ritual that is intimately related to the city? I watch “Good morning New York” religiously and I feed the squirrels in Central Park. What is your New York City dream? I’m warning you, it’s really a pipe dream (smiles)…. To have the lead in a musical! (bursts out laughing)
