Remi Carlioz’s
alone in New York

For your, New York means...
Excitement, culture, buzz...

What is your best recollection of New York? I was 16 or 17, and I was landing in New York for the first time. On the road, when I was arriving, I saw Manhattan from afar between the buildings. It was a very striking impression. I have a more anecdotal recollection. By chance, I found myself at Björk's birthday party and she was mixing. A friend dragged me there.

What appeals to you about New York? I never get tired of the city's architectural audacity. Contemporary architecture in New York is absolutely sublime.

What annoys you about New York? Nothing. Because the city is constantly reinventing itself, you don't have time to focus on things that annoy you.

Do you have a ritual that is closely linked with the city? I have lots of them. I buy the NY Times and I read every single line, from first to last, especially the Sunday edition. I buy my orange juice at Dean & DeLuca. I go to the Apple Store.

What is your favorite time of day in New York and why ? Very early in the morning. I love to wake up and see an almost empty New York. I feel like the city belongs to me. This joy, together with the drunkenness due to the lack of sleep, makes me feel completely special.

What difference is there between the Parisian and New Yorker in you? In fact, there is fundamental difference. In Paris, I'm with my family but in New York I am alone. That's how I like it. The other difference is that New York gives me a crazy desire to take everything in. Because time is limited, I want to pack in everything.

Who are your New York friends? I have friends and business acquaintances. But I don't really have a New York circle. What I love, is to be there alone.

For you, who is the "Paryorker" par excellence? Philippe Starck. He is the perfect embodiment of the "Paryorker" if only because he's designed so many things in New York.

What is your New York dream? To live there.
